Fundamentals of Drawing - 4 Class Course

Description of Program: Drawing as a means of visual organization. Emphasis on drawing fundamentals of line, value, shape, shadow, proportion, composition, and layout. Subject matter varies. Pencil, paper.

Duration: Four classes lasting three hours each.

Materials: Instructor will provide handouts and basic art materials for this course. Scratch paper, drawing paper, pencils, tortillon sticks & erasers included.

Class Method: Face-to-face studio environment. Combination of demonstration, skill building exercises.

Course Objective:

  • Improve student eye / hand coordination 
  • Learn characteristics of various line and shape qualities 
  • Learn various types of drawing- contour, sketch, gesture, rendering 
  • Familiarize students with various styles of drawing and help them find their own.
  • Inform students about key characteristics of

                a. Line & Values

                b. Shape, Shadow & Layout

                c. Space & Composition

                d. Proportion, Perspective & Layout Instruction

Instruction Tools: Handouts will be provided by the instructor for each class. Reference materials will also be provided for demonstration.

Student Supply:

  • Students should bring in one small object to draw in class #2. We will include it in a still life setup.
  • Students should bring in one photo of a  of a landscape that they like to class #3. They will create a drawing from their photo.
